OutlookResearch & impactDuring the second world war, humanity witnessed a clear example of how science can affect social development. In 1938, fleeing the nuclear physicist Lise Meitner and the Jewess from Berlin to Sweden. Before the escape, she had worked in a team where the chemist Otto Hahn. On the initiative's honor had been studying what happens when uranium is irradiated with neutrons. When Meitner come to Sweden, Hahn reported results from one of the experiments. Meitner recognized the results and realized that uranium nuclei was broken when hit by neutrons, while large amounts of energy released. This discovery was later the basis for the development of nuclear weapons as well as nuclear power plants. In 1944 received the Otto Hahn alone receive the Nobel Prize for the discovery of nuclear fission, while Lise's honor role for this research ended up in the shade.
